About the Artist: Cailyn Meyer
Hi, I'm Cailyn Meyer. I was born and raised in Virginia, near Washington DC. I love fantasy, mythology, and history, in all their forms, from games to movies to books. After graduating college with a degree in Education, I moved with my husband to the Seattle area. We now live in the Snoqualmie Valley, in the foothills of the Cascades, with our two cats. It's a great area. I absolutely loved teaching, but I've always wanted my own craft business. I decided that now was the best time to take the plunge and try. I work on Snow Lake Studios full time.
Ever since I can remember, I've been crafting. I started with popsicle stick puppets and finger paint and made my way to clay, yarn, beads and finally metal. Growing up, I tried to master three new techniques or media a year. I taught myself about polymer clay, weaving beads on a loom, glass etching, and more. (My college roommate taught me how to crochet, though.) I've always been attracted to 3-dimensional art, objects that you can pick up, feel, play with. I started my jewelry path with seed beads and I quickly moved to wirework after dropping a package of seed beads on my floor (even after several vaccumings, I still stepped on beads for weeks after.)
Friends and family always told me that I should sell my work, and for a while I sold my small polymer clay figurines at a local artisan shop in Virginia. But creating the same pieces over and over again just didn't excite me. It, unfortunately, became more of a chore than an expression of creativity. I gave up on the notion of selling my work for a while. I wanted to be able to create different pieces for each person and that seemed impossible.
I stumbled across chainmaille while looking for a good idea for a present for my husband. We both love fantasy novels and games, and I was looking for something along those lines. I found a vast amount of knowledge online about chainmaille, and I was hooked. There were so many weaves and so many materials! I could set up a system where items were personalizable; each piece would be unique. It was the perfect combination of my love of fantasy with my love of crafting. After years of weaving chainmaille, I'm still addicted to it; my husband says if I could find a way to maille in my sleep, I'd never put down my pliers!
